Company Profile
We develop solar and wind farms in 16 countries on four continents
ABO Wind is a globally successful project developer for renewable energies with more than 500 employees. Since 1996, the company has connected around 700 wind energy, solar and biogas plants with an output of 1,500 megawatts to the grid.
We are currently working on the development of new projects with a total capacity of 6,500 megawatts. These projects are located in 16 countries on four continents and exceed the capacity of four average nuclear power plants. Two thirds of the projects under development are wind projects and one third are solar projects.
Project development in Iran was discontinued at the beginning of 2019.
The ABO Wind experts provide assessments, handle the approval process and financing, and take care of grid connection and construction. ABO Wind takes on all steps of project development from site acquisition to construction. We purchase projects at all stages of development and bring them to a successful conclusion.
We provide long-term technical and comercial operational management and maintenance, inspections, repairs, gearbox endoscopies or technical assessments.
We offer an open and honest approach to project development, backed up by an experienced team, many of whom have been working within the renewables industry from its early stages. At ABO Wind we see the whole picture and actively engage in public consultation prior to the submission of all of our projects.
Our bioenergy team provides operational management of biogas plants, develops new biogas plants or purchases and improves existing ones, and offers bioenergy services.
In order to contribute to a successful and comprehensive energy transition, our own department for future energy develops new concepts for a clean mobility, energy storage, and hybrid energy solutions.
Our division of heat supply provides efficient heating and electricity from cogeneration plants or photovoltaics to large real properties.
When Dr. Jochen Ahn and Matthias Bockholt started their company to develop wind farms in 1996, wind energy was still in its infancy. In the first few years, the company's small team of passionate wind energy pioneers had to work out how to do things on their own, thus bringing forward not only their company, but the wind energy sector as a whole. Without a set of effective regulations, improvising was part of every day's work. Since then, the industry has professionalised a lot and has become much more competitive. Renewable energies are now a major economic factor.
Along with the renewable sector, ABO Wind has grown steadily. The company's founders are still the company's main shareholders and still manage the company.
Internationally we are currently working on solar and/or wind power projects in the following countries: France, Finland, Spain, Ireland, United Kingdom, Greece, Netherlands, Hungary, Poland, Argentina, Colombia, Canada, South Africa, Tunisia and Tanzania. Our strategy is an early entry in emerging markets, boosted by cooperations with local partners. We establish a local presence early on in order to engage and work closely together with local and regional communities and authorities.
Our subsidiaries can also count on the support from the experienced staff at the ABO Wind headquarters in Germany. We benefit from our long-term experience in different countries under different sets of regulations. A division for international business development assesses new markets and prepares our market entry in additional countries.
In Ireland and Finland ABO Wind has also established subsidiaries focusing on commercial and technical operational management, maintenance and services, and technical assessments for wind farms.
By choosing and purchasing our turbines in Germany, we benefit from economies of scale internationally. Our experts for project finances secure financing under favorable terms, for example from the German government-owned bank KfW. International investors as well as local or regional utilities are among the investors who buy our wind farms after construction.
Climate change is one of the biggest challenges for humankind and for our societies. The transition to a climate friendly, sustainable energy supply based on renewable energies is absolutely imperative. From our point of view, economical success and ecological benefit are mutually dependent. Our work ethic unites idealism with realism and expertise.
Economical prudence, careful planning and ethical responsibility are at the core of ABO Wind. It is fun to work with us. We work not only for the success of our company, but also for the larger picture: global climate protection.
