100 megawatts wind farm to be built in Finland without subsidies

Välikangas

(Wiesbaden/Helsinki, 21 February 2019) The independent asset manager Luxcara has acquired a fully developed project in Välikangas, Finland, from ABO Wind. The wind farm has all necessary permits for 24 turbines with a height of 220 metres as well as grid capacity for 100 megawatts. The project is located in the municipality of Haapajärvi, where ABO Wind has already connected two wind farms with a total capacity of 30 megawatts to the grid in 2015 and 2017. The German developer will also be responsible for the construction of a corresponding substation. Grid connection is scheduled for the summer of 2020.

„The wind farm will produce as much electricity as approximately 90,000 average households in the EU consume,“ says Dr Klaus Pötter, who is responsible for Finland in ABO Wind’s general management. The electricity will be sold to an electricity purchaser directly via a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) without government subsidies. „This shows that wind farms can produce electricity much more cheaply than coal or nuclear power plants,“ says Pötter.

With the sale of the project rights, ABO Wind strengthens its role as a major project developer in Finland. Despite having been active in Finland for only six years, the company has already connected 100 megawatts to the grid themselves and has sold ready-to-build projects with a total of 150 megawatts. The project pipeline is stacked with additional ready-to-build wind farms with a total capacity of 100 megawatts. Approximately 500 further megawatts are currently in development.
