December 1, 2023: The December 11 Virtual Open House has been cancelled

ABO Wind has cancelled the virtual (Zoom) open house regarding our proposed Beaverton Battery Energy Storage project (the Project) that had been scheduled from 6:00 pm to 7:30 pm on the evening of Monday, December 11, 2023. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

ABO Wind will no longer be submitting our Project proposal into the Ontario Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) Long-Term Request for Proposals (RFP) process at this time. However, we will continue to advance the Project in anticipation of future procurement opportunities to serve Ontario’s energy system reliability needs, with further details to be confirmed in 2024.

Going forward, we will ensure you are kept apprised of any further announcements or public meetings related to the Project. Updates will be also posted on this website.

If you require further information, please reach out to the Project Manager, Nicholas Gall (contact at the end of this page).

Project information

Site Location

The Beaverton BESS Project would provide 80 MW of battery storage capacity. The Project would utilize approximately 4 acres of a ~85 acre parcel of previously cultivated land adjacent to the Hydro One Beaverton Transmission Station, north of Thorah Concession Rd. 3 and west of Highway 12. The battery units would be housed in modular containers.

The layout of the infrastructure within the project boundary remains to be confirmed, and will be determined through additional engineering studies, equipment procurement, and environmental studies. The Project will connect to the existing 230-kV transmission line located on the site.

Potential Impacts and Environmental Studies

The Project will submit a Class Environmental Assessment (Class EA) for Minor Transmission Facilities in accordance with the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act (EAA) for the planned interconnection facilities, or substation. The Class EA will determine the environmental impacts the Project substation will have once in operation. More details on this EA process are available here:
https://www.ontario.ca/page/class-environmental-assessments-approved-class-ea-information

ABO Wind commissioned Morrison-Hershfield to undertake archaeological and environmental assessments of the site evaluating vegetation, wetlands, wildlife presence and habitat. We have now collected enough data to begin the required environmental permitting processes for the project in 2024.

Background

About ABO Wind Canada Ltd.

ABO Wind is an international renewable energy company developing projects in 16 countries, with more than 1200 employees, 3600 MW of developed capacity, and 15,000 MW in development worldwide. ABO Wind Canada Ltd. was established in 2017 and is actively developing projects in Alberta, Nova Scotia, Newfoundland and Labrador, New Brunswick, Saskatchewan, and Ontario.

About battery storage in Ontario

Ontario is fortunate to have an exceptionally low-carbon electricity system, thanks to the large proportion of nuclear, hydroelectric and renewable resources in our province. However, these resources tend to be inflexible, meaning they cannot easily be adjusted up or down depending on customer demand. While fossil fuel resources such as natural gas plants offer much greater flexibility, they also generate significant local air pollution as well as greenhouse gas emissions.

Battery energy storage systems can absorb excess electricity generated during times when renewable sources produce more energy than needed and release this stored electricity when it is required. For instance, on a sunny and windy day, solar panels and wind turbines might produce more electricity than the immediate demand. Batteries are able to store this electricity and release it when it is needed most.

In the context of Ontario's growing electricity demand, energy storage can provide the necessary flexibility to balance the grid and ensure that it runs as efficiently as possible.

What does a battery energy storage site look like?

The battery energy storage site will consist of an access road and rows of modular containers, each containing battery cells, inverters, transformers, and other electrical components. The modular containers will rest on foundations and almost all the electrical wiring and communication cabling will be buried underground. The site area would be surrounded by a fence and safety signage.

Community Benefits

A positive impact of the Project is the enabling of a more efficient use of existing local electricity infrastructure and supporting long-term reliability of the Ontario electricity system. In addition to providing revenue for the landowner, the Project will also provide employment and contracts for local goods and service providers, as well as tax revenue for the Township of Brock. By strengthening local transmission system capacity, the Project could also help to facilitate more economic growth in the Brock region, and improve local grid reliability. At ABO Wind, we believe that we are more than just the projects we develop but are a part of the communities where they are developed.

Consultation

ABO Wind will be working with local government, stakeholders and members of Indigenous communities, as we further develop and refine our proposal for the Beaverton BESS Project.
