ABO Wind are delighted to have secured planning permission for the Cullion project. The permit comes following an amendment to the proposal to reduce it to 4 turbines totalling a capacity of up to 16.8MW. We are currently considering next steps for the project including exploring routes to market. When operational, the project will make a valuable contribution to the UK Government’s commitment to Net Zero and addressing climate change.
ABO Wind is proposing to develop a wind farm located approximately 5.2km south east of Draperstown and 5.4km south west of Desertmartin in Co. Londonderry, in the townlands of Cullion, Tintagh and Letteran.
The proposed scheme would have an installed capacity of between 19.8MW and 25.2MW, comprising 6 turbines. The proposed hub height ranges between 84m and 93m with blade lengths ranging between 52m and 58.5m. The maximum tip height would be 145m. The proposal also includes an Ener-gy Storage Area. Access to the site would be taken from Cullion Road.
The proposal was developed following a long period of Environmental Impact Assessment, including a Public Consultation, culminating in the submission of a planning application in July 2019 accompanied by a full Environmental Statement.
This project supports National and EU objectives for promoting renewable energy development and achieving the Northern Ireland target of 40% electricity supply to be generated from renewable sources by 2020.
With an installed capacity of between 19.8MW and 25.2MW, the Cullion Wind Farm development could generate between 74.6 million and 89.4 million KWh of clean, green electricity per year, enough to supply between 24,055 and 28,848 homes (between 50% and 60% of the households in the MUDC area) and reduce CO2 emissions by between 30,206 and 42,716 tonnes per annum. This saving is equivalent to taking between 19,406 and 27,443 cars off Northern Ireland roads.
Additionally, ABO Wind NI Ltd is dedicated to ensuring that its wind farms contribute directly to local communities therefore a Community Fund will be established for the entire lifetime of the wind farm development.
