An application seeking Full Planning Permission for Brishey Wind Farm has been submitted to the Causeway Coast & Glens Borough Council. The subject lands are approximately 4.8km east of Dungiven, in the townlands of Brishey and Curraghlane. The proposal seeks Full Planning Permission for 6no. turbines, each up to a maximum blade tip height of 150m. The scheme would have an installed capacity of up to 28.8MW. This would be sufficient to provide a renewable energy sources to power in the region of 35,523 and 35,930, reducing CO2 emissions by between 37,978 and 62,386 tonnes per annum. The Climate Change Act (Northern Ireland) 2022, sets an ambitious renewable electricity target of 80% by 2030. To achieve this goal, the level of renewable generation will have to more than double based on 2022 levels. The contribution of Brishey Wind Farm is essential in helping to achieve Northern Ireland’s legislative renewable energy target of 80% by 2030.
The proposal as submitted has followed an extensive period of site investigation and surveys, informing the Environmental Impact Assessment submitted. A successful Pre-Application Community Consultation period was also carried out prior to submission, including for a Public Exhibition Event and education initiative in association with a local Primary School. In addition, ABO Wind NI Ltd. are delighted, should Planning Permission be forthcoming, to remain invested in the local community through the establishment of a Community Fund for the 35-year lifetime of Brishey Wind Farm.

The proposal was presented at a public exhibition event in which the local community were invited to attend on 9th June 2022. As well the event, an online presentation of the proposal was made available for consideration and comment by the public. A planning application accompanied by a full Environmental Statement is currently being prepared for submission to the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council before the end of 2022.
The proposed Brishey Wind Farm site is located in the townlands of Brishey and Curraghlane, Co Londonderry, approximately 4.8km east of Dungiven and 13km southeast of Limavady.
The proposed scheme would have an installed capacity of up to 28.8MW, comprising up to 6 no. wind turbines up to a maximum blade tip height of 150 meters. A range of turbines are being considered for this project, with dimension combinations to include hub heights between 82m - 92m and rotor lengths between 57.5 - 68m. Access would be taken from the Gelvin Road via a the Old American Road, previously used to access an American Communications Base of which foundations can still be seen on the site.
This project supports National and EU objectives for promoting renewable energy development and achieving the Northern Ireland target of 80% of electricity supply to be generated from renewable sources by 2030.
Achieving these targets means we need to more than double the number of renewable generation across Northern Ireland. The proposed development will make a significant contribution towards these targets. With an installed capacity of up to 28.8MW, the Brishey Wind farm has the potential to provide enough energy to power up to 43,873 homes as well as reducing carbon dioxide emissions by up to 55,947 tonnes per year.
Additionally, ABO Wind NI Ltd is dedicated to ensuring that its wind farms contribute directly to local communities, therefore a Community Fund will be established for the entire lifetime of the wind farm development.
