Natural conditions are perfect
The natural conditions of Greece are ideal for the exploitation of renewable energies. The government seeks to put this potential to better use and published a draft of a national energy and climate plan in early 2019. The plan provides raising the share of renewable energy sources in power generation to 55 per cent by 2030. In 2017, it stood at 27 per cent. Coal and gas contributed 31 and 30 per cent.
Fist tender for new wind and solar parks
In 2018, Greece allocated tariffs for new wind and solar parks through calls to tender for the first time. In 2018, wind farms with a nominal output of 207 megawatts were connected to the grid. Overall, 2,844 megawatts were installed by the year’s end.
Significant increase in installations
In 2019, a large number of solar projects were connected to the grid. New installations totalled 160 megawatts, bringing the total solar capacity in Greece to around 2,800 megawatts by the end of 2019. The government plan published in December 2019 envisages increasing solar capacity to 5,000 megawatts by 2030.
Greece is also making strong gains in wind energy, reaching a record in 2019: with 727 megawatts, more wind energy capacity was connected to the grid than ever before. Greece therefore ranks seventh in the EU. In total, almost 3,600 megawatts of wind energy were connected to the grid at the end of 2019.
Tariffs for 95 megawatts secured
ABO Wind has been active in Greece since 2017 and founded the subsidiary ABO Wind Hellas S.A. in early 2018. Since its establishment, ABO Wind Hellas has successfully participated in the auctions organised by RAE with 95 megawatts of solar projects; 45 megawatts of these projects have already been constructed and are currently feeding into the grid. ABO Wind is working on further projects in Greece with an output of several hundred megawatts.
