Information for Prospective Wind Farm Landowners

A Wind Farm on Your Land?

A modern wind turbine can produce more than 6 million kilowatt hours of electricity in one year, which supplies electricity for over 1,400 households.

Wind turbines are usually over 100m high with a blade diameter spanning around 80-90m.  In addition to the turbines a wind farm site requires an electrical substation building and access tracks.  Wind farm access tracks often upgrade existing farm tracks to allow for the delivery of the turbines and also to improve farm access.

Only 1-2% of a site is normally required for the development of a wind farm, which is why wind energy developments are so compatible with farming.  Farmers can continue to use land for growing crops or grazing livestock.  Sheep, cows and horses are not disturbed by operating wind farms and are often seen walking up to the base of turbines.

Land that is suitable for wind energy development will have a good wind speed, topography that allows access for vehicles and without designations such as National Scenic Areas, Special Protection Areas or Sites of Special Scientific Interest.  ABO Wind would undertake a screening study for any prospective wind farm site to determine its feasibility.

Benefits

Financial Benefits

There is no costs for a landowner to host a wind farm site in partnership with ABO Wind.  We have the experience and resources to take sites through the feasibility, planning and construction phases of a wind farm project.  If you are interested in diversifying your current business, a wind farm on your land can offer an income for the lifetime of the wind farm, based on the amount of electricity generated.  Landowners are able to continue farming practices on their land.

The lifetime of a wind farm is usually 20-25 years and over this time the wind farm would be generating clean electricity from a renewable resource which would add to the UK targets for renewable electricity generation.

Community Benefits

Contracts for the infrastructure of a wind farm, depending on size and location, are normally in the order of £100,000 to £300,000.  ABO Wind often contracts regional companies for the construction of wind farm access tracks, turbine foundations and the laying of underground cables.

Local communities also benefit from wind farms by way of a community benefit fund which ABO Wind would provide.  This fund is dedicated to community projects and distributed as the local community sees fit.

In addition to financial benefits local communities benefit environmentally and social.  Wind is a renewable source of power therefore wind farms continue offsetting carbon emissions for many years to come.

  Partnerships With Landowners

ABO Wind UK staff work hard to ensure a strong relationship with wind farm landowners and we are very careful to ensure that the needs of the landowners are considered when developing wind farm sites.

Our wind farm projects in Germany and France provide farmers and landowners with a steady income over the long term while allowing farming and other activities to continue on the land.  Our business in the UK is set to expand and we are looking for wind farm sites in Scotland and England.

What ABO Wind Can Offer

Site Design and Planning Approvals

The development of a wind farm begins with site evaluation. ABO Wind carries out its own wind measurements to determine the capacity of a site to produce electricity from wind.  Our team of designers would plan a wind farm site to maximise electricity output.

We have experienced staff who manage the required environmental assessments before submitting a planning application. ABO Wind staff are accustomed to dealing with local communities, Councils and Government agencies as part of the planning process.

Financing

Our finance department has negotiated with banks for many successful projects. In order to increase their profitability, ABO Wind binds projects partly in international financing.

Wind Farm construction

Our experienced civil and electrical engineers supervise the construction of wind farms and coordinate the work to ensure schedules and quality standards are met within the
budget.

Operational management

After commissioning a wind farm our operational management team takes over the long term responsibility for the project. The ABO Wind technical team ensures that the output of electricity from the turbines is optimised and with remote monitoring damages are identified at an early stage to minimise any down time.

Contact

Interested landowners are invited to contact us to discuss opportunities and our technical staff would be happy to undertake an obligation fee feasibility study to investigate possibilities on your land. walsh.jenny@abo-wind.com
